Modelling garments

Modelling is about giving "relief" to the clothes. The technique consists in colouring the "darkest" areas of the garments - hollows of folds and contours of figures - leaving a bigger quantity of pigments. The technique is similar to that of the lines but you must use a very wide brush and draw much more in thickness or in width. The colour's consistency for modelling is less liquid than for the puddle but with more egg emulsion. Therefore, it could be necessary, afterwards, to stump carefully the traces left by the brush strokes using some emulsion and a little bit of the same colour. Use quite a dry brush to obtain soft transitions between the nuances of a colour.

Modelling can also be done applying small puddles on the places to be darkened. This process is longer and less "living" but allows very progressive colour gradations.


After modelling, apply one or several layers of glazing on each garment to obtain the desired colour intensity while preserving a good transparency. Glaze is a mixture of colour with a lot of emulsion and water that is applied homogeneously over an entire surface.

The beginner often tends to use too much pigment in his mixtures, so before glazing, he should say to himself: I can make it in several layers. It is easier to add a layer than to remove it!


The left Angel

The colour for modelling is a mixture of red ochre with 10% of yellow ochre.

The mixture for glazing: red ochre with 20% of yellow ochre.

The right Angel

The colour for modelling is a mixture of viridian with a touch of yellow ochre and a hint of red ochre. Be careful: the colour of the green garment is very damaged on the original and we have chosen to imitate it. Some of the modelling does not seem always logical as, for example, the colour on the knees...

The colour for glazing: a little bit of veronese green and of yellow ochre - but just a little bit - and a lot of emulsion. Apply a very transparent layer to stump the modelling.

The central Angel

The colour for modelling is a mixture of burnt Siena with a little bit of red and black.

The colour for glazing: burnt Siena.

The blue garments

The colour for modelling is a mixture of clear ultramarine blue, 10% of viridian and a small touch of vermilion red.

The colour for glazing: ultramarine blue, cobalt blue (10%) and a touch of viridian.
