The Pantocrator of Vatopedi

The basic sanquir (proplasmos)

The basic colour for the flesh is a mixture of red ochre (4 parts) and yellow ochre (1 part) with a little bit of viridian and a point of ultramarine blue. The colour must be quite liquid with enough emulsion so that the layer is quite solid. Apply the puddle with a large brush (Raphael 8408 No 5), stirring well the mixture each time the brush is reloaded because the heavier pigment (Viridian) tends to settle down at the bottom of the pallet.

We chose to differentiate the colour of the hair from the one of the flesh adding to the initial sanquir a little bit more of viridian and a point of burnt umber.
