The Pantocrator of Vatopedi

Lining the garment

Lining the garment with a brush constitutes the first step of painting. You have to choose a brush with a perfect tip. The consistency of the colour should be rather dry to attain precision. Make a mixture with little water but with a good proportion of egg emulsion. The drawing needs to remain solid during the application of the floating layers (tempera).
The blue mixture for the dress at the top (Himation) is made out of ultramarine blue, a little bit of viridian and a point of vermilion red. The mixture for the clavus: vermilion red with a point of red ochre. The colour for the clothing at the bottom (Chiton): pure burnt Siena.
