The Pantocrator of Vatopedi

Colouring the himation

Preparation of the mixture: ultramarine blue (3/4), viridian (1/4) and a point of vermilion red with little egg emulsion, to obtain an homogeneous colour when applied. The colour must be quite liquid and the areas that will remain transparent must be known in advance. Start applying the puddle from the top and "divide" the area to be coloured according to the features of the drawing. Quickly apply the puddle pushing the pigments towards the "darker" zones. Ultramarine blue is a heavy pigment, therefore, any retouch in the puddle will leave a mark on the surface. In case you had to retouch the surface, wait for the puddle to dry completely.

Colouring the clavus and the chiton

The clavus was coloured with vermilion red and a small point of ultramarine blue.

The basic colour of the chiton is made out of vermilion red with a little bit of red ochre and a point of ultramarine blue.
