Gilding on a red background To obtain a warm gild with red nuances we coloured all the surfaces to be gilded with a puddle of red ochre. We let it dry and rubbed the entire area with the finger in order to obtain a smooth surface. Then, we applied the gilding water size (which has a milky aspect) by floating and without scraping the bottom, since the red layer is fragile. Finally, we added a second layer of a-little-more-diluted water size and we applied the gold leaves. After a meticulous cleaning, we protected the gild with transparent shellac.
