Icon nb 67

Size : 27 x 21 cm.

Linden board

Gilded haloes. Egg tempera.

Original composition that revolves around the Mother and the Child, who are the "center of Presence" in this icon. The size of the Mother of God is increased compared to the other figures, creating what is known in iconography as a "perspective of importance." The Child is swaddled entirely—including his head—and turns toward the spectator, calling him fo inner rebirth. The two angels witnessing the scene are Michael on the right and Gabriel on the left. Their hands are covered by their cloaks as a sign of humility. The ox and the donkey raise their heads from their rocky stable and warm the Child-King. Vegetation also praises the Creator, and the tree already bears ripe fruit as a promise of salvation made to people of goodwill. The deep blue background and borders emphasize the supernatural light of the blessed Incarnation.
