Saint Stephen the Great (Stefan cel Mare, c. 1433–1504) was the Voivode (Prince) of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504, renowned as a brilliant military strategist and defender of Christendom against Ottoman expansion. He won 46 of 48 battles, including the crucial Battle of Vaslui, and built numerous churches, earning him the title "Athlete of Christ" from Pope Sixtus IV.

Due to his devotion and role as a defender of the faith, he was canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 1992.
