The Pantocrator of Vatopedi

Assist gildingt

After having slightly powdered the surface to be gilded with talc, apply the gilding size (here we used brown ale) onto the whole area or by "zones". Wait about twenty minutes and apply the gold leaves. If the size is too dry, revive it by blowing slightly with your breath on the surface of the icon... Remove the surplus of gold with a soft brush and let it dry.

Protect the golden rays with a fine layer of transparent shellac and let it dry.

The frame

The colour of the frame is made out of yellow ochre with a point of red ochre. The application of the colour mixture - very liquid and with very little egg to avoid rings and to increase the homogeneity of the layer - is applied with a large squirrel brush (watercolour brush). Once dried, fix the colour with a water / egg (50 /50) mixture using the same large brush (only do one passage at a time, the layer is fragile!).

The red line (China red) around the frame is drawn to "isolate" the icon from the material world. An icon is a "Doorway to the Infinite".
