The Pantocrator of Vatopedi

Colouring of the background of the icon

For the purpose of harmonizing the colours and to perceive the tones of the whole icon, we decided to colour the background before highlighting the rest of the character. The colour is made out of Naples yellow with a little bit of yellow ochre. The mixture is applied floating as homogeneously as possible.

The highlights of the garment

The only garment that has to be enlightened is the himation because assist gilding will be applied on the chiton. This highlighting is carried out in two principal stages:

- A first layer is done with a very transparent mixture of white lead (or white silver) and a point of ultramarine blue. This colour can be applied floating or brushing delicately, as shown on the illustration above. Once dry, this layer must be brushed delicately with a mixture of egg emulsion and water using a quite dry brush. This last brushing must slightly melt the colours in order to obtain an imperceptible passage between the highlight and the blue of the garment.

- The second layer must reinforce the lights at some well defined places. The colour is made out of the previous mixture with a point of titanium white. These strokes are applied by direct painting - almost dry colour - and must be repeated several times. The coloured layers tend to absorb the highlights and the force of white attenuates while drying.

When these highlights are dry, apply a layer of egg emulsion (50% water / 50% egg) onto the whole himation. Finally, retrace the lines with a dark and dry mixture of ultramarine blue, a point of viridian and a touch of black.
